- At the concentrations used in modern toothpaste (typically 1,000–1,500 ppm) and when spat out rather than swallowed, fluoride has one of the strongest safety and efficacy records in dentistry. Whether to use it is ultimately a personal decision — we recommend excellent products in both categories.
- What is hydroxyapatite and does it actually work?
- Hydroxyapatite is the same mineral your enamel is naturally made of. Clinical research, particularly from Japan where it has been used since the 1970s, suggests it can support remineralization comparably to fluoride when formulated at effective concentrations (typically 5–15%).
- Do I really need to avoid SLS?
- SLS is not acutely unsafe, but it is a strong detergent with no cleaning function in a toothpaste — its job is foam. For sensitive users it is associated with canker sores and gum irritation. Most premium natural toothpastes omit it.
- Are glass jar toothpastes hygienic?
- Yes, provided you use a small dedicated spatula or the tip of a clean toothbrush rather than dipping the same brush in daily. The mineral, low-water formulations used in glass jars are naturally inhospitable to microbial growth.
- Why do so many natural toothpastes cost more?
- Certified botanicals, glass or aluminum packaging, smaller manufacturing runs, and independent certifications all cost more than commodity ingredients in a plastic laminate tube. You are paying for material integrity, not marketing.
- Can kids use fluoride-free toothpaste?
- Yes. Many families choose fluoride-free formulations for young children who are still learning not to swallow toothpaste. The American Dental Association also endorses a rice-grain smear of fluoride toothpaste under age three; both approaches have serious clinical support.
- Is hydroxyapatite safe if swallowed?
- Hydroxyapatite is biocompatible — it is the same mineral in bone and enamel — and is not associated with the swallowing-dose concerns that limit fluoride use in very young children.
- Do whitening toothpastes damage enamel?
- Peroxide-based and high-abrasivity whitening pastes can. We prefer gentle mineral abrasives and, increasingly, hydroxyapatite-based whitening that lifts surface stain without eroding enamel.
- What is the most sustainable toothpaste packaging?
- Refillable glass jars and toothpaste tablets in aluminum tins or paper pouches are the lowest-waste formats. Mono-material aluminum tubes are a strong middle ground and widely recyclable.

- Yes — provided the formulation includes real remineralization support (usually hydroxyapatite) and your daily routine covers brushing technique, flossing, diet, and regular dental visits. Fluoride-free places more of the caries-prevention burden on the rest of the routine.
- Does SLS actually clean teeth?
- No. Physical abrasion and dentifrice chemistry do the cleaning. SLS produces foam — a sensory expectation, not a mechanism. A low-foam paste is not less effective.
- Are whitening toothpastes safe?
- Gentle mineral-abrasive and hydroxyapatite-based whitening pastes are safe for daily use. Peroxide-based and high-RDA (over 150) whitening pastes should be used occasionally at most, or you risk irreversible enamel wear.
- How abrasive should toothpaste be? What is RDA?
- RDA — Relative Dentin Abrasivity — is the industry benchmark. For daily use, aim for RDA under 100. For sensitive teeth or exposed dentin, under 70. The FDA caps consumer paste at 250 — well above what most mouths tolerate long-term.
- What ingredients matter most on a toothpaste label?
- The active (fluoride, hydroxyapatite, or neither), the abrasive, the surfactant (SLS or a gentler alternative), and the flavor system (named botanicals or an undisclosed 'flavor' entry). Everything else follows from those four.
- Do toothpaste tablets actually work?
- Yes, when the formulation is complete — a real active (hydroxyapatite or fluoride) plus a functional abrasive. Some early tablets omitted abrasives and were essentially breath fresheners. Read the label the same way you would a tube.
