What it is
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a naturally occurring mineral commonly sourced from limestone, marble, or ground eggshell.
In toothpaste it serves as a primary or secondary abrasive and — because it partially dissolves in the mouth — releases small amounts of bioavailable calcium.
Why it matters
Calcium carbonate is slightly harder than hydrated silica; well-formulated pastes control this by particle sizing and blending.
The trace calcium release can support the remineralisation environment alongside fluoride or hydroxyapatite.
Traditional 'tooth powders' are often almost entirely calcium carbonate — effective, but harder to control RDA on than a modern gel.

Safety considerations
- Non-toxic and food-grade. Safe to swallow in small amounts, though we do not recommend it.

- Not appropriate as the sole abrasive for daily use if your dentist has flagged enamel wear.
