What it is
Fluoride in toothpaste is delivered as sodium fluoride (NaF), stannous fluoride (SnF2), or sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP).
All three release the fluoride ion (F−) in the mouth, which incorporates into hydroxyapatite to form fluorapatite in the outer enamel layer.
Why it matters
Decades of clinical evidence show a real, measurable reduction in caries from 1,000–1,500 ppm fluoride toothpaste used twice daily.
Systemic fluoride exposure is a separate topic from topical fluoride toothpaste — the mechanism, dose, and safety data differ.
