What it is
Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is a naturally occurring calcium-phosphate mineral.
'Nano-hydroxyapatite' refers to particle size (below ~100 nm) and was originally developed for NASA astronaut oral care in the 1970s.
Why it matters
Peer-reviewed non-inferiority trials show 10% nano-hydroxyapatite performs comparably to 1,450 ppm fluoride for early caries prevention in adults.
Because hydroxyapatite matches native enamel chemistry, it also reduces sensitivity by occluding open dentinal tubules.
It carries no swallowing-risk considerations, which is why it is a common choice for kids' toothpaste in Japan and increasingly in Europe.

Safety considerations

- There is no meaningful nano-safety concern for oral-cavity use — the particles are functionally similar to the calcium-phosphate crystals in dairy foods.
- Choose formulations that publish concentration; 'contains hydroxyapatite' without a percentage tells you very little.
