Rayon (and its European twin, viscose) is a plant-derived synthetic made by chemically dissolving wood pulp and re-spinning it into fibre. It is not, on its own, unsafe — but the processing chain adds unknowns that a 100% cotton alternative avoids.

What it is

A cellulose fibre made by dissolving wood pulp in a solvent (traditionally viscose) or a closed-loop solvent (lyocell/Tencel) and re-spinning it into thread.
